When we are thinking about what communities unite people according to their interests, numismatics and philately come to mind… Sounds boring, isn’t it? But sometimes people cooperate to do weird things together. Here are top 8 communities that will definetly surprise you.

Barefooters

Despite not all members of this community live in hot countries, they prefer to walk with bare feet. Meet the main enemies of shoe shops: barefooters. For more than 20 years barefooters have been refusing to wear any kind of boots. These guys believe that their unusual crush will help them to become healthier and to reunite with the nature. As it stated on their manifesto, feet tend to remain soft and weak with regular shoe wearing, while practicing barefooting will make feet grow stronger, healthier and more resilient. Bare feet are moving freely, and exposed to fresh air and sunlight while unencumbered by tight restraints that are shoes.

Slow Movement

How slow can you go? The pace of mofern everyday life becomes faster and faster day by day. But there are people who slow the clock hands down. ‘The Slow Movement’ was created in response to our hectic everyday lives. It begins on ‘Slow Food’ movement that was established by Italian Carlo Petrini in 1986 as an opposite response to fast food. It promoted the use of fresh local and organic food grown in farms and consumed with friends and family together. Later, the Slow Movement appeared as an extension of the Slow Food Movement. It includes all the spheres of life and human activity: slow relationships, slow work, slow exercise, slow hobbies, slow sex, slow travel and slow education and slow entertaiment. Altogether, it encourages people to prefer quantity to quality and long-term benefits to short-term ones.

Plane Stupid

Airplanes seem to be the most efficient and the easiest way to travel all over the world in XXI century. But surprisingly not everyone consider them to be a weal for the public. Protesters from the Plane Stupid organization put forward four demands: to end to short haul flights and airport expansion; to reduce the number of planes flying to help address the threat of climate change; to stop aviation advertising, and transition to sustainable jobs and transport.  The community began in 2005 and by now has staged a lot of non-violent protests by occuping airports and forcing airlines worldwide to delay or cancel flights.  For example, in 2010 at the Aberdeen airport, nine Plane Stupid protesters were fined for occupying the airport’s tarmac, affecting hundreds of travelers and preventing an emergency flight from taking off.

The Brights

The world, especially in the Internet era is full of misleading information and unscientific facts. TheBrights movement , established in 2003, is here to enlighten people. The Brights  movement started by Paul Geisert and Mynga Futrell in 2003, aims to promote naturalistic worldview. The word ‘Bright’ refers to people who believe that the world is free of supernatural or mystical elements. These are atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, materialists, rationalists, secular humanists, skeptics and others from 138 countries. They get together on seminars and arrang public talks to promote scientific view of life.

Squatter’s Movement

The squatters are the people who fleed from their cities to start new lives in areas that were abandoned by society. Most of such communities use the barter system: they survive by farming and trading goods with others. Additionally, many of the squatter’s believe that no one can truly own land and that they can live wherever they want to. They organize the infrastructure, establish schools and libraries, in other words, create a new community in an abandoned place they have settled in. However, squatters often have problems with city goverenments and law: they do not pay taxes and living in unfit buildings can be illegal in most of cases.

Food Not Bombs

You may ask: “What’s the relation between food and war”? Food Not Bombs preaches down the policy of militarism: goverenments spend a huge amount of money for army, military equitpment and military campaigns while these millions of dollars could be spent on feeding the people who live in poverty starve all over the world. The main activity of the group is to recover food that would otherwise be thrown out and prepare vegetarian or vegan meals out of it. The meals are then served to everyone with no restrictions. The group also serves free meals at protests and other events and is often the first to offer food and supplies to people in areas of disaster.

Health at Every Size

There is a stereotype that only athletic body is healthy. But t‘Health at every size’, a movement that recognizes that good health is best achieved independent from considerations of size, states the opposite. It promotes a helathy lifestyle and aims to support people of different shapes and sizes by giving the idea of self-acceptance. Fatter people tend to be called unhealthy and ugly and this leads to vain dieting that  ruins eating habits and health. After joining this society people reach the harmony with their body and improve as phisically, as mentally.

The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement

In case if this movement finally succeed, it will turn that all the previous ones worked in vain. The movement with one of the most radiacal ideas is called “The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement” (VHEMT). Its members believe that it is human who ruins our planet by selfishly “colonizing” other species for this needs. First of all, it is is an environmental movement that calls for all people to abstain from reproduction to cause the gradual voluntary extinction of humankind. The group states that a decrease in the human population would prevent a significant amount of human-caused suffering. The extinctions of non-human species and the scarcity of resources required by humans are frequently cited by the group as evidence of the harm caused by overpopulation.

Some aims of these movements seem to be impossible to reach, while others surprising ideas are on their way to come true. How do you think, is any of them able to change the world?
