“Every day is a day of white heterosexual man”, – feminists often say. After Donald Trump was elected on the President post, their considerations were significantly proved. An artist who has participated in a large number of exhibitions worldwide, Natalie White is now working on the raising awareness for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. That’s “ERA NOW” writing what she was recently arrested for.

Problems with the police

Just at the moment when Natalie wrote “ERA NOW” on the sidewalk in front of the US Capitol Building, the police caught her and set in jail for the time of studying the case. But an artistic woman has her own views on the situation: she turned out her trial into a creatife performance in order to demonstrate the permissiveness of the government power and its ignorance toward sexism problems. Since 1982 ,  the ERA project has been reintroduced during every subsequent session of Congress, but still hasn”t been ratified. However, it is marked that almost 90% of Americans said they are ready to vote for it.

“They’re taking a prosecutor away from actually going after criminals. They’re going after me, when they could be spending that money on testing rape kits or prosecuting perpetrators of domestic violence”,- says White. Broadly, it is quite evident that the case of White is quite foolish and demonstrates nothing but police’s inability to solve it peacefully. Fingerprinting analysis and a special flight to New York for arresiting Natalie at her home (they actually found out that she was absent in Washington at that moment),- all those measures are seemed to be excessive for a simple civil actionism.

Hope for the future

The trial, that was scheduled on 17th January, sentenced White to a $50 charitable donation and a six month stay-away from the Capitol. Does it mean that a process of ERA ratification stops for a that time? Conversely, White is strongly intended to speak with lawmakers finally. Being free woman and taking part in Women’s March, she became even more encouraged by the amount of people supporting her. She felt like ERA is a brilliant idea worth fighting for. So, by making it loud some results should be definately achieved, and it will be a big breakthrough.

What is ethical for artists?

If you’re touched by the modern art performances, you’d better know that Natalie is not just about it all: her graphic works, collages and paintings are represented in large expositions mostly in New York. Bodylanguage, feminism,  violence problems and human rights are the main issues of her works.  But still, as it usually happens, she is famous for her shocking demonstrations, where she is naked or making public vandalism. Where is the border, the boundary between hooligan actions and a piece of art? In contemporary performances it is not obvious for the majority of people. A lot of social resonance was made by one of her settlement, when she was lying on a rumpled US flag installed inside a giant plexiglass box. Economic inequality, pregnancy discrimination, violence against women, and other forms of discrimination against women and girls are pervasive and leave women without effective legal recourse”,- that is how artist explains the idea. In addition, humiliation is not for her, as long as for the rest of the women too. Many performance artists used body as a canvas, an installation, a screen of feelings and thoughts.
