On June 3rd the streets of 135 cities worldwide will witness #MarchForTruth, aimed to the revival of American democracy legitimacy. Let’s figure out what does the march organizers are fighting for in particular, how they want to pursue their agenda and what do other supporters think of the initiative.

What Stands For #MarchforTruth

#MarchForTruth is a protest, which will take place on Saturday, June 3rd, in Washington, D.C., and 135 other cities globally. The march start at Union Station at 18th and Market streets at 10 a.m. From there, marchers will make their way to the St. Louis Arch.

It is aimed to raise the voices of the U.S. citizens, who want to hear the answers from Donald Trump, calling «for urgent investigations into Russian interference in the U.S. election and ties to Donald Trump, his administration and his associates». The main idea of the march’s organizers lies in their strong conviction in the importance of the citizens’ legitimacy of democracy, far beyond the interests of any party, or any President. So they strive for «the pursuit of truth, and for the restoration of faith in our electoral system and the Office of the Presidency» about Donald Trump’s ties to Russia.

As John Bonifaz, an Amherst-MA-based attorney and political activist specializing in constitutional law and voting rights, states for Medium: «We all need to be standing up at this critical moment in our history. We are facing a constitutional crisis. This is a president who has so openly defied the rule of law, and our Constitution, he must be held accountable…these marches coming up for the #MarchforTruth are critical…».

“This is a very critical moment in our history and that question needs to be answered fully and clearly for the American people”, – says John Bonifaz.

The march will witness the speeches from congressional Representatives Jerry Nadler, Nydia Velasquez, Brad Sherman, Mike Quigley, Al Green, Robin Kelly, Jamie Raskin, and Donald McEachin, writers and commentators including Watergate prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks, writer and author Sarah Kendzior, tyranny expert Timothy Snyder, and commentator Sally Kohn, activists including Linda Sarsour from Women’s March, Susan Lerner from Common Cause, and others, artists and musicians including Hamilton star Javier Muñoz‏, appearing in New York City.

National Partner organizations include MoveOn, Women’s March, Indivisible, Public Citizen, Free Speech for People, Town Hall Project, The Opposition, Swing Left, Stand Up America, Common Cause, OurStates, Action Group Network, flippable, Rock The Vote, Lawyers for Good Government, DailyKos, Working Families Party, Rise to Run and Progressive Democrats of America.

Main Goals

The question is quite simple. What in particular the organizers do mean under the investigation? On the official page, they state 4 main goals, they are fighting for:

  • An independent commission must be established, and Congressional investigations should be properly resourced and pursued free of partisan interests;
  • As much information should be made available to the public as possible, and as soon as possible;
  • Congress should require Donald Trump to release his tax returns to clarify his business interests and obligations to any foreign entity;
  • If crimes were committed or if collusion is discovered, it must be prosecuted.

According to co-founder Jennifer Slavik Lohman: «The appointment of a special counsel is huge. But most of their work takes places behind closed doors, outside the public eye. This is something we really need to keep at the forefront». She thinks that public hearings should be both independent and bipartisan, which will keep the matter front and center in the public’s consciousness. «It’s not just St. Louis. We’ve heard from people as far as Carthage, Missouri, who are planning to attend», — she says.

Indivisible Chicago

The March in Chicago, in one of the largest local destinations, will begin at 11 a.m. at Federal Plaza, 230 S. Dearborn St. It is organized by the newly formed citywide chapter. Up to now the group has raised $10, 385 of its $10,000 goal.

According to the Indivisible Chicago’s website «the March is calling on accountability and transparency from federal, state, and local officials. Also, the group is marching for an independent investigation into the connection between Russia and President Donald Trump’s administration». The initiative group also cites the firing of former FBI Director James Comey, what the group believes is the Trump administration’s attempts to cover up possible corruption.

«The Trump Administration began under a cloud of deception, winning an election tainted by foreign influence. In Chicago, we will stand indivisible in the fight for Truth» , – announced Jason Rieger, founder Indivisible Chicago.

Quotes From Partners

«Across the country, constituents have flooded town halls to let their representatives know that they want impartial investigations into Russian interference in our elections. Transparency is critical to the democratic process, and we are proud to partner with the #MarchForTruth in holding Congress accountable to the people that elected them», comments Jimmy Dahman, executive director of Town Hall Project.

«The allegations that President Trump or members of his team may have coordinated with the Russian government to influence the 2016 election are the most explosive charges in American political history. The American people deserve and demand a credible independent investigation», – says Ron Fein, Legal Director of Free Speech For People.

«It’s clear that Michael Flynn, who was compromised by the Russians, would still be in the White House if it weren’t for leaks, yet that’s all that the GOP seems to want to focus on in the #RussiaGate hearings. What more is this administration hiding? With our nation’s sovereignty at stake, it’s time for Republican leaders to put country before party just like they did during the Watergate scandal», – states Andrea Chalupa, author, activist and #MarchForTruth organizer.

«Since the inauguration of President Trump, The Russian hacking of our election and potential subsequent collusion with members of the Presidential campaign has cast a pall over the entirety of the administration. It is only natural that the people want to get to the bottom of this matter, so American democracy can be reestablished as a shining beacon of light around the world.  The world and the people need closure», – comments Josef Preston, Indivisible Charleston Legislative Coordinator.
