Made by a group of students from the The Animation Workshop of VIA University College in Denmark, the film “Cream” was supposed to show the true abomination of human being.

Everything goes on in a doctor’s waiting room, accompanied by the silent music and ordinary human sounds. Terrible and disgusting sides of human nature come out with vomit and placenta. The first thought: what the hell is going on in this short? Ugly puppets, ugly actions, ugly feelings. And then you remember: this is all the grotesque and absurd are about.

At the beginning a man walks into a reception area of a doctor’s office and then urinates in a planter as if it all should be so. Suddenly pregnant couple enters the room and, although they catch the man in the act, they keep silent and unemotional. When the man is done, he sits on the floor below the window and his witnesses take their seats on the bench near the doctor’s door and the biggest and dominant object in the room – an ice cream machine. And here the whole absurdity kicks off.

Each element of the film has been made by hand, the creators used puppets and clay to catch most important moments in the stop motion. It’s an uncomfortable watch, with dreadful characters behaving in heinous ways. This short definitely provokes either a strong desire to turn it off because of the hostility, or the determination to watch it up to the end. The group describe the film as revealing the “cold and ugly sides of human nature”. Till the very end one can easily miss the fact that he or she has just witnessed the cycle of birth and death in a mixture with the “absurdity of life”.

The story mainly takes place from the perspective of a CCTV camera, and the film mixes up its pace by interspersing closer crops, such as the guy licking ice cream or the old woman pulling on the other woman’s hair.

The tiny details of the clay figures were done scrupulously, the great amount of time spent on them and the impressive skill of Dutch graduating students can be put in no doubt.

“What could possibly go wrong in a healthcare institution where help is nearby? Let’s hope the doctor can help!” The Animation Workshop says. Well, let’s see. The short was created by the director Lena Ólafsdóttir and animators Stina Willadsen, Kristian Olesen, Jonas Scott Di Hu and Marie Erkisen.

Enjoy the grotesque.
