Business accounts, celebrities and brands often faced with too much spam and negative comments in their accounts. For a long time to deal with it was difficult and took a lot of time and effort. Blocking spammers and haters was not always effective. However, Instagram offers a new feature that allows the user to instantly improve the situation in their favor.

What Has Happened?

To date, profile owners can work with comments coming to their posts manually. Unfortunately, this technique is very inconvenient for those who have high volume comment threads. Deleting spam and negative comments often cost celebrity and brands great efforts. According to The Washington Post, Instagram’s developers intend to introduce a feature that will allow sideslip certain words and phrases in the blacklist, or «turn off comments completely». Instagram’s head of public policy, Nicky Jackson Colaco, said: «Our goal is to make Instagram a friendly, fun and, most importantly, safe place for self-expression». According to TechCrunch, to activate the option, the user will need to specify in the settings of unwanted words and expressions. The system will automatically find and remove those comments, in which they are used. Innovation has pleased more owners of business accounts. The feature will be available for others in the nearest future.

Pros

According to Pew Research Center, 40 percent of all people reported experiencing some form of harassment online. Instagram has more than 500 million monthly users, and 300 million of daily users. New widget will be a good service to those faced such problem here. For Instagram’s administration this filter is also helpful. Sometimes social networks are charged with a participial harm by disuse censorship. But when this censorship appears, there is a group dissatisfied with the new framework and the restriction on freedom of expression. Clearly, loss of a particular group are not desirable. Now, the responsibility passed on to the users themselves. They can decide whether or not to turn off comments altogether, or simply limit the use of certain words. Rumor has that Taylor Swift has used this feature to remove all the negative comments after her quarrel with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. There is no evidence, but, as Jackson Colaco’s statement said, the firm has been testing the feature on prominent accounts ahead of its release. It would make sense.

It is worth noting the brands that publish materials that cause the most clashes. For them, this feature is a lifesaver. All those who promote body positivity, inclusivity and diversity more than others are under attack. Cosmetic firms invite men like Manny Mua, James Charles, Angel Merino and Patrick Starr to advertise their product. Posts with their participation attracted sometimes not the most pleasant comments. Ginger Pelz, social media manager at Benefit, said: “We hope that the moderation tool will help us keep more hate out of our comments when we post an image of a boy in makeup or anyone who may be a ‘non-traditional’ version of beautiful”.

Cons

New feature definitely brings a lot of benefits, but within reasonable limits. Brands should take note: disabling comments not only protect you from the negative, but from constructive criticism too. Instagram is good that you can immediately get a feedback to your post. It helps to brands improve their products or reveal its previous shortcomings. Without an ability to criticize a product people may dislike or feel doubts about the quality of the brand.

Kevin Del Rosario, associate director of social media at Huge, also believes that keeping comments open is correct. “Allowing fans to voice their opinions, whatever they may be, is what makes social media special. If you’re a brand and you have recurring troll problems, you have bigger issues, simply spilling over into social media. And a comment-moderation feature, while helpful, isn’t going to save you». One should not forget that social networks set up in order to establish communication and to act openly.
