Last week, the day before NY Fashion Week started Luka Sabbat and Noah Dillon presented the installation “Hot Mess”. It took place at a reputable gallery Milk in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. To be precise, the exhibition took over the gallery — the opening night was hype. “Guests held their champagne glasses in awe of the vibrant imagery surrounding them,” Milk media says.  

A 19-year-old model and stylist, the Artistic Director of the “Hot Mess” Luka and a photographer from Colorado Noah united to create some fire. They got acquainted on Twitter — “I liked his stuff a lot and I saw him on twitter a lot because people were retweeting him and he knew who I was so when I direct messaged him to work he was ready to go, told him to meet me in LA and he was there 2 days later”. For two years they’ve been collecting photos from fashion weeks and some parties. They focused on unusually-dressed, creative, young and ambitious people.

The two were purposely shooting real people from streets or social media, not models or celebrities. Each photo was accompanied by poem-like words provided by a writer Curtis Eggleston. Reflecting the evolutionary trajectory of the visual image they aimed to represent “today’s generation and its yearning to stand apart”.

Growing up Luka Sabbat hated camera and fashion and preferred hip-hop or playing video games or sleeping. Somehow he happened to end up being an influencer in the sphere. Yet, he is an in-demand model and stylist and his  friends are such famous people as the Jenners, Tyler, the Creator and A$AP Rocky. He worked with Tommy Hilfiger, American Eagle and Hood by Air, Adidas and Kanye West. Now ReQuest Model Management represents him.

Luka has a gift for being liked. “I’ve been really into Saint Laurent for a minute,” he says, “and when I posted a picture of myself in the Chelsea boots, people started D.M.’ing me right away, and I got mad kids to wear the boots”. First he didn’t realise his influence but now that each of his new publications in social media makes a splash it’s obvious. Popular brands usually promote products with the help of young and cool youths as Luka. John Jannuzzi, the United States deputy editor of Twitter Moments, said: “He [Luka] represents a life a lot of people want, and that’s important to advertisers. I wish I was that kid.”

No wonder Sabbat made such a progress both in digital and fashion. Jessica Romer, his mother, used to be a model booker and a fashion show production assistant. Fashion industry workers sometimes stayed at her Paris apartment and looked after little Luka.The artistic atmosphere and honoured people always surrounded him.

New horizons

Though Luka concerns shooting now he always wanted to create something himself. On releasing the “Hot Mess” he found the role of Artistic Director being interesting. He liked being the painter way more than being the canvas. It was also a luck such gallery as Milk supported their idea and gave them an opportunity to show off. A co-founder of Milk, Mazdack Rassi told that they are focused on endorsing the next generation of culture and the work of the three artists suited the idea. As a result, both sides were glad to interact.

The closing party (with such guests as Kendall Jenner, the Hadid sisters and Tyler, The Creator among others) was even more lit that the opening night. Started at Milk gallery it continued downstairs in the JamRoom the VIP festivity capped the exhibition.

Sabbat believes everything you want to do deserves making time. “An idea is only an idea until you do something about it,” he said, “You can’t say you’re going to be a photographer and then you are the next day. You just have to put in the work. You can’t just say, “If photography doesn’t work out in a year I’m going to move on to making tea.””

In the same time, one should remember the success is that you even did something at all. “People will say this wasn’t successful if not enough people came. How about just the fact that people came? How about we actually did the fucking thing?” Luka wonders.
