Jana Babez is a total babe. She is young, sexy, talented. That’s what we say, starting to raise a new pop-star in media, don’t we? However, that’s what she struggles with.  I’m particularly interested in how society builds a female figure up to a godlike status, only to wait for her to cross some invisible line and then punish her, – says Jana. She works her body all over to find new ways of influence. Her main theme is a women identity. Inspired by Cindy Sherman, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and her own sexuality, she usually starts with a simple stereotype than untwists it to extravagant, beautiful and witty work of art.

It All Started With A Bowl Of Oranges,

Which teenage Jana Terblanche ones was asked to draw in school. After winning a contest and getting her picture published in a calendar, Jana realized that she’s gonna become an artist. She enrolled Michaelis School of Fine Art , then took a pseudonym Babez, defined herself as a performer and graduated with a sexiest final project Cape Town University’s ever seen: her own porn calendar. On January 25th Jana has made her last exhibition, called Miss Debutant, which somehow sums up the first period of her work. Today Jana Terblanche Babez is not a debutant anymore. Let us remind you her first five key performances.

Hollywood Cerise (2013)

A pink faceless body with a pony-tail of blond hair explores Cape Town. This performance represents a whore. She wears slutty clothes, dyes her hair and has no proper thoughts or will. The work shows just how ridiculous a stereotype could be.

They Build You Up To Break You Down (2014)

This bride never gonna through a wedding bouquet. Instead, she is all covered with flowers. This performance represents an act of unwanted marriage and again shows us a woman as a fragile and isolated figure with no will. She is a bride on a conveyer belt, lost and endlessly reproducible, – comments Jana.

Miss American Dream (2014)

Britney is Jana’s role model number one and biggest inspiration. In 2014 Jana has recreated several famous looks of Miss American Dream. The message of the performance is not that simple. It could seem from the first side that it is to deny one’s natural sexuality and ask a society of stereotypes, gossip, and envy to go fuck itself. But in fact, it’s to re-obtain, to claim one’s right for his/her own beauty and desire of others.

Leave Me Breathless (2014)

A Plastic bag is a useful and controversial material in art. For Jana it works in both directions. It enlightens the beauty of face and body of a performer. It also gives the audience a sense of purity and clarity. However, plastic is also a sort of suffocating material. Again it reminds us about unfreedom of a women body.

Morning Series (2014)

A woman wearing a chic black dress is walking in the streets of Cape Town in the morning. Her face is almost hidden under a long black veil, but in a close-up, we can find out a beautiful make-up and a brilliant collection of jewelry. In this performance, we see a type of a strong woman, who would always maintain her reputation in sorrow and in joy. It looks both powerful and ridiculous, because maybe sometimes women forced to become too strong…

I Never Promised You A Rose Garden

All those performances are more or less a part of I never promised you a rose garden multimedia exhibition. It’s important to notice that Jana works not only with her own body, but also does prints, sculptures, installations, videos. Basically, all performances of JB are about how a society gives pre-destined roles to women, about how they build them up to bring them down. A perfect wife, it-girl, pop-star, slut… Jana enlightens them in an artistic way to show their absurdity, always in her mixture of low and high art style.
