Every day we are fighting against oppression of minorities or for the equality of all nations and genders. This should be not only about the policy but in all the spheres. That`s why let`s look at the «Black Mirror», a photo project by Deddeh Howard who wants to make this world better and shows how black models are beautiful.

Last Tuesday model and blogger Deddeh Howard launched a project which name is «Black Mirror». It looks like a series of fashion photos and you can ask: so what? Deddeh Howard was born in Africa, Liberia. She knows so much about this not easy life and how to do her best because now she lives in Los Angeles and is very and very well-known. Surely, her photos have a special meaning. Deddeh Howard has recreated famous ads with Gisele Bündchen, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, posing for brands like Gucci, Chanel, VS and many more. She copied these poses, made the same makeup, has the same clothes and models’ expressions in each of the photos.

What was her inspiration? Unfortunately, it was only one of the awful cases from her own life when she was trying to become a model. «Agents would say, «Wow, you’re stunning. I love you, but we’re already booked with all these other girls. You should go try commercial.» So I tried — same thing,» she tells. «I just gave up. I felt really nasty about myself — disappointed, distraught. I left my entire family [in another part of the country] to pursue this career.» Or one more story: «I would go to casting calls for ads, only to be told by casting agents that two to three black models had already been cast. But when I would see the finished ad, those black models were nowhere to be found. I was at the grocery store looking [at the magazines] and I literally just counted the models,» Deddeh adds. «I brought all of the magazines home and turned the pages and said to my boyfriend, «Have you seen this? There’s not a black girl!» Then the idea [for the ‘Black Mirror’ series] just came to me.»

This project was made with some meaning difficulties. Firstly, it needed to do lots of research to recreate all the details and products. Secondly, finding time to take pictures between studying for exams and attending classes because she’s currently in college. As a conclusion Deddeh preferred to shoot in the night and on weekends.

«Thanks to everybody for helping me believe in myself and giving me the courage to share this,» thanks Deddeh Howard. To sum up, we can admire her «Black Mirror» and remind one more time: all people are equal and equally beautiful.
