The photographs Alexa King makes look like film frames — the light, the colour, the “scenery”, everything appears to be perfect. She captures her passion to rodeo transmitting the alluring spirit of Wild West. “You can see through my eyes that i’m falling in love with whatever i’m shooting,” Alexa says.

The photographer has been keen on rodeo since she had moved to the South from suburban Maryland. She found the South life inspiring and started shooting it. “I would drive through small towns in Mississippi and I would see this little old ladies who have been friends for 50 years bowling together,” she says. Her hobby brought her to rodeo and she fell in love with it. The first time she went to the rodeo, she was wearing high heeled boots and all black, as she recalls. People would make fun of her and call her Yankee babe, but over time Alexa managed to earn their trust.

Now all people in her photos are her friends. “The love for the rodeo stuff has been so kind and wonderful. I hope I do those people justice and show a different world,” King says. She appreciates the welcome, love and support they gave her. Alexa is not very experienced in photography, she took some classes but it’s not enough to stand alongside with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association sports photographers. Nevertheless she feels comfort in the community. The performers are always trying to help her and are glad to appear on her shots.

King studied film at NYU Tisch, but was dropped out from there. Later she started working on film sets in New Orleans as a prop person, but injured her achilles tendon and could’t continue being on set. She got to have a lot of leisure time and spend it practicing with her high-grade film camera and cinematic lens.

Alexa doesn’t have a huge photography background but no-one can accuse her of being unprofessional. Her photos are undoubtedly beautiful. She immerses the viewer in her work and makes one linger on it. She turns a motionless picture into a story which you just feel. Maybe she hasn’t a photography degree but she definitely can work around living animals in tense situations and manages to catch right moments in a mess.

The photographer plans to release a book of her rodeo works but this theme is not the only one Alexa is working on. Lately she united with Levi Magyar and Stephen Kinigopoulos to create a film “Fishbowl”. Soon they are going to finish it. Alexa King is certainly worthy of attention. Her works are glorious and deep.
